By night, Yoshimori Sumimura, a junior high student, assumes the role of a "kekkaishi," a demon-hunter who specializes in creating magical barriers around his prey. During the day, Yoshimori faces other challenges, including his addiction to sweets and his difficult relationship with his crotchety grandfather. His life becomes even more complicated when he is forced to contend with his 16-year-old neighbor and childhood friend, Tokine Yukimura, who is also a kekkaishi and a member of a family feuding with Yoshimori's over the true practice of the kekkaishi art.
