Summary

Fifteen years after a catastrophic event known as the Second Impact, humanity is beset by a new threat in the form of monstrous celestial beings known as Angels that invade Tokyo-3. Despite the use of advanced military tactics and munitions, humanity is unable to defend itself against these invaders. The only hope for salvation lies in the hands of NERV, a mysterious organization led by the enigmatic Gendou Ikari, who employ giant humanoid robots called Evangelions to combat the Angels with cutting-edge technology and protective barriers known as Absolute Terror Fields. The story follows Shinji Ikari, a 14-year-old boy who returns to Tokyo-3, where his father, Gendou Ikari, operates NERV. Shinji has been struggling to cope with the trauma of being abandoned by his father and the emotional neglect he suffered at his hand. This internal struggle is further complicated by his fear of opening himself up to others, a sentiment that is challenged by the kindness shown to him by 29-year-old Misato Katsuragi, a high-ranking NERV officer. When an Angel attack forces Shinji into action, he is thrust into a world of psychological trauma as he is forced to pilot Evangelion Unit-01, a giant robot that synchronizes with his biometrics.
