In the sleepy town of Enohana, 21st-century life is disrupted by the arrival of aliens, who live among humans with little fanfare. Mayuko Chigasaki, a struggling dirt-poor student, finds herself living with NieA, a low-caste ("Under Seven") alien, who seems to operate without concern for the consequences of her actions. As Mayuko's diligent efforts to make ends meet are contrasted with NieA's carefree existence, the destroyed alien mothership looms in the background, a constant reminder of the aliens' presence in the town.
