Rikon Kurabu

At just twenty-five, Yuko is known as “Mama,” a title she carries with practiced poise. To seem older and more credible as the owner of a hostess bar in Ginza, Tokyo, she styles her hair with deliberate severity. Yet her youthful appearance masks a life already marked by hardship: she has been divorced for two years and has a baby daughter, Asako, whom she has left in the care of her mother in the countryside. Yuko’s daily reality is a balancing act of unrelenting pressures. Her ex-husband harasses her regularly, while her employees’ excesses and customers’ rudeness test her authority and patience. At the same time, she finds herself drawn to Ken-Chan, her bartender, complicating her professional and emotional boundaries. As a major economic crisis looms, financial troubles threaten the stability of her bar and the fragile life she has built. Caught between motherhood, desire, duty, and survival, Yuko must navigate a world that demands she appear stronger than she feels.
