Itezuru

Known as O-Tsuru—the crane—because of her childhood habit of standing on one foot to keep the other warm, a young girl is sold by her parents into the demanding life of a geisha. Her journey begins in an okiya, the traditional boarding house where geisha reside, and she starts at the very bottom as a shikomikko, a lowly apprentice. Bound to serve the elder women of the household, Tsuru spends her days carrying out their errands and fulfilling their requests. Through this grueling routine, she slowly uncovers the hidden realities, sacrifices, and daily struggles that define the lives of these women behind closed doors. Eventually, the day arrives for Tsuru’s own initiation into this world. She is summoned to the private quarters of her patron, the benefactor who has agreed to pay the substantial fees required for her formal debut ceremony. This pivotal moment marks her transition from a mere servant into a recognized member of the floating world. Upon completing the rites of passage, Tsuru leaves her childhood name behind and takes on the elegant title of Tsurugiku. Under this new identity, she steps fully into the world of pleasures, destined to rise and become a celebrated geisha renowned throughout her society.
