Set against the backdrop of 1960s Japan, *Sumire Hakusho* follows the life of Sumire, a resolute twenty-year-old woman employed as a sales clerk in a bustling department store. Refusing to rely on men for her livelihood, she boldly regards her own body as a strategic instrument to carve out her independence and secure a rightful place in society. For Sumire, this perspective serves as a deliberate contract to guarantee her personal freedom and mount a defense against the pervasive machismo that routinely obstructs women. Yet, as she navigates this uncompromising path, a profound question arises: can anyone truly shield themselves from the complexities of human nature and the unpredictable power of their own emotions?
