Following the monarchy's invasion, the Duchy of Alita has fallen under the rule of the Sckinian Empire. In the wake of the conquest, the children of the former duchy's nobility are absorbed into the imperial education system, where they are obligated to accept imperial-chosen partners each spring upon turning eighteen, for the purpose of producing offspring. Tiana, a count's daughter, is paired with Adel, an elite knight with whom she has clashed endlessly since childhood. Their utterly unromantic first night together is marked by heated arguments and constant squabbling. Tiana assumes it will be their one and only encounter, yet Adel summons her night after night, insisting it is merely their duty.
