Mountain B&B: Liaozhai Monsters at Your Service

Wu Chang’s only dream was to open a quiet bed-and-breakfast deep in the mountains and finally enjoy the easy life. But somehow, every single specter from the classic tales of Liaozhai started crawling straight out of the pages and into his inn. From the haunting beauty Lu Xiaoqian and the Painted Skin ghost to the eerie Ghost Bride and crafty yellow weasels, his once-peaceful retreat is now overrun with supernatural beings. Desperate to keep his human guests from fleeing in terror, Wu Chang has no choice but to keep the monsters in check while drafting a strict set of house rules. Rule one: if you see a woman in red inside the inn, do not compliment her—especially not on her looks, and this rule applies exclusively to female guests rated eight out of ten or above. Rule two: after midnight, never walk the corridors alone; if you encounter a beauty in green, do not speak to her, and under no circumstances should you play the qin—this warning is for all unmarried men still on dry land. Rule three: ignore any white silk hangings you spot in the shop—do not look up, do not approach, and definitely do not touch. Rule four: small animals often appear in the courtyard; if you see a weasel, shut your eyes and leave immediately—do not linger, and whatever you do, never shout "What a cute weasel!"—because it will truly demand a celestial investiture from you. With these rules in place, Wu Chang thought he had everything under control. To his utter dismay, however, his guests didn't flee—they only grew more thrilled by the forbidden thrills.
