Greed has nothing to do with it. At its heart, this is the story of a student who asked for almost nothing—just a small measure of happiness, a place in a classroom, an ordinary life that never needed to be justified. But poverty shrinks the world without mercy, and in a household with nothing to spare, even the simplest dreams can start to feel like impossible demands. When the choices finally run out, the protagonist is left to offer the only thing remaining: themselves. Selling oneself here is not born of want or ambition, but of a quiet, aching longing for the normalcy everyone else seems to hold so easily. Yet the world is rarely patient enough to ask why before it judges, and understanding is a luxury that hardship seldom affords. What remains is a question that refuses to settle: was it the protagonist's fault for wanting what others received without ever having to ask? The fault of parents who simply had too little? Or does the answer dissolve into something larger—an unfinished "or—" that leaves readers to decide for themselves whether yearning for an ordinary life could ever truly be wrong?
