For nine years, she poured herself into her role as Duchess, laboring tirelessly to support a husband who never once showed her warmth. Her reward for a decade of devotion was contempt, cold indifference, and baseless accusations of infidelity. So when he finally announces his intention to divorce her—hoping to wed the lover he has kept by his side all along—she receives the news not with heartbreak, but with quiet liberation. Rather than the tears and pleading he clearly expects, she calmly waves the papers under his nose and signs them without a moment's hesitation. Unlike before, there will be no staged desperation and no feigned poverty; the woman before him simply declares that she is finished and asks only to be set free. She even forgoes any claim to alimony, requesting instead the return of her dowry—nothing more. When her husband scoffs and asks what she could possibly accomplish with such a modest sum, having never once cared what she did in all their years together, she answers with unshakable confidence: she is going to open a dessert cafe. What he dismisses as pocket change is, to her, the first ingredient of a brand-new life—one she will build with her own hands, far from his cold estate.
