In an alternate Meiji Era, Sakamoto Ryunosuke returns to Kyoto from Shanghai with his loyal youkai companion, Nekomaru. As a licensed youkai, Nekomaru is required to live under the law, which dictates that all youkai must be registered with the Kidou Shinsengumi Co. Ltd. to coexist with humans. However, the Shinsengumi faces opposition from the Tsubamegumi, a group that resents the new law and its implications for their way of life. As it turns out, Ryunosuke is the son of the Shinsengumi's owner, setting the stage for a complex web of relationships and responsibilities within this unique world.
