In 972 A.D. Kyoto, the capital of ancient Japan, corruption and decay have taken hold. Selfish samurai and onmyoji seek power, while famine and disease ravage the city. The Imperial Court, driven to act, dispatches Minamoto no Raiko, a renowned samurai, to retrieve the legendary gem, said to possess the power to save the world. However, Raiko falls ill, and his younger sister, Hikaru, secretly takes his place on the perilous journey. Along the way, Hikaru encounters a diverse array of people and experiences, testing her resolve and character as she navigates the treacherous landscape of ancient Kyoto.
