Ōoku: The Inner Chambers

Set against the backdrop of Edo period Japan, a mysterious and devastating illness known as the Redface Pox begins to ravage the nation's male population. Within eight decades of its initial outbreak, the disease claims the lives of three-quarters of all men, fundamentally altering the structure of Japanese society. As the surviving male populace dwindles to a precious minority, women step forward to fill every role once exclusively held by men, ascending even to the supreme position of shogun. In this radically transformed world, men are no longer the dominant force but are instead carefully guarded as vital providers of life. Their scarcity elevates them to objects of immense value, shielded from the dangers of a society now governed entirely by women. The most striking consequence of this shift is found within the highest echelons of power, where tradition has been rewritten to reflect the new reality. The most beautiful young men across the land are gathered and sent to serve within the shogun's Inner Chamber. This secluded sanctuary, once reserved for female consorts, becomes a gilded domain where prized men attend to the ruler's needs. It is a world where gender roles have been completely inverted, and survival depends on navigating the intricate politics of a matriarchal regime built upon the fragile remnants of manhood.
