The Age of the Flying Boat is a fifteen-page, fully watercolor-illustrated manga that served as the direct inspiration for the acclaimed animated film Porco Rosso. Originally serialized in Model Graphix, a monthly publication dedicated to scale modeling, it was featured as part of Hayao Miyazaki’s Zassou Note series. The work stands as a vibrant testament to Miyazaki’s enduring passion for vintage aviation, showcasing heavily modified 1920s aircraft rendered with meticulous technical detail. Its pages are populated by good-hearted, delightfully eccentric men who share an unwavering devotion to these magnificent flying machines. Compared to its cinematic adaptation, the manga maintains a noticeably lighter and more playful tone. The protagonist, Porco, is identified simply as a retired Italian Air Force pilot, but his deeper personal history remains unexplored. Consequently, the narrative omits the intense conflict with the fascist government seen in the film, though the rising tide of fascism and the characters' quiet opposition to it are briefly acknowledged. Furthermore, the character Gina does not appear at all, leaving Porco as a fundamentally cheerful figure rather than a brooding one. Despite these differences, the core storyline and its inherent charm translate seamlessly into the later anime. During the climactic aerial duel between Porco and Donald Chuck—known as Curtis in the film—Miyazaki directly addresses his audience, noting that while animation could capture the grandeur of such a life-or-death battle, the comic medium must instead rely on the readers' imaginations. At the time of publication, no one anticipated that this very scene would eventually unfold on the big screen.
