Yeong-Do is an impoverished woodcutter who lives a solitary existence, quietly yearning for the warmth of a family to call his own. Hoping to secure enough wealth for a future wedding, he acts upon a local legend claiming that anyone who tosses an axe into a sacred mountain pond will have it transformed into solid gold by the resident mountain spirit. Driven by this desperate hope, he hurls his only tool into the water. However, instead of a benevolent deity granting him riches, the depths yield something far more dangerous. From the pond emerges an Imugi, a serpentine creature bound by a cruel destiny: to ascend into a true dragon, it must first slay its own companion. The beast is already seething with fury, having been repeatedly pelted by axes from superstitious humans who mistook it for a wishing well. Fully intending to slaughter the woodcutter standing before it, the enraged Imugi suddenly hesitates. Captivated by an inexplicable and alluring scent radiating from Yeong-Do, the creature’s murderous resolve begins to waver. Instead of striking him down, the Imugi finds itself irresistibly drawn to the lonely woodcutter, sparking a fixation that neither of them could have anticipated.
