Set against the gritty backdrop of 1970s New York, Trevor Edwards is a successful lawyer whose personal life has recently unraveled following the end of his engagement. His professional standing soon faces an equally devastating threat when he realizes he has misplaced crucial documents belonging to one of his clients. Unable to locate the missing files anywhere, Trevor resigns himself to the impending ruin of his career, convinced that all hope is lost. Salvation arrives from an unexpected source in the form of Gene, a young cleaner employed in the same building as Trevor’s law firm. Having witnessed the lawyer drop the papers on his way out, Gene tracks him down to return them, effectively saving Trevor's livelihood. Grateful for this intervention, Trevor learns that Gene is currently homeless and offers him shelter at his home to escape the harsh winter cold. Yet, as their lives become intertwined, Trevor is left to wonder whether offering a warm place to stay is truly enough to repay the man who rescued him from total destruction.
