Good-by

This poignant collection of one-shot manga stories explores the delicate boundaries between sorrow, memory, and the supernatural. In the opening tale, "Hitotsume wa Mokuyou ni Naku," childhood friends Jun and Haruka are haunted every Thursday by the "One-Eyes"—beings that cling to their hosts and leak anxieties and fears. While Haruka longs to help, the detached Jun always talks him out of it, leaving them to wonder why they alone bear witness to these entities. The title story, "Saraba, Yasashii Yuuzuru," follows Maki, a young woman grappling with abandonment after losing both her mother and grandmother. When her college boyfriend dumps her, her childhood neighbor Nao presents her with a mysterious box meant to retrieve important items from her own memories, though Maki finds only a single red marble inside, sparking a journey into the magical unknown. In "Nakigao no Kimi e," Sumi bears a lifelong burden of cruel name-calling due to a facial birthmark. Driven by bitterness, she wishes a similar fate upon her twin brother Natsumi—a wish that chillingly comes true when they reach middle school. Finally, "Hataraku Obake" introduces Kouno, who dies saving his father's cat Mimi and unexpectedly becomes a ghost. Ironies abound as Kouno struggles to become a professional ghost while secretly working for the "Working Ghoul" agency to protect his father from a premeditated crime.
