Peleliu: Rakuen no Guernica

Based on Kazuyoshi Takeda’s acclaimed manga, Peleliu: Rakuen no Guernica is an anime film that chronicles the harrowing daily existence of Japanese soldiers stationed on a remote Pacific island during World War II. Set against the backdrop of the Battle of Peleliu—a grueling, months-long campaign marked by devastating casualties—the story explores how ordinary men endure the unimaginable pressures of war while clinging to their individual hopes and humanity. At the center of the narrative is Tamaru, a young soldier whose deepest aspiration is to survive the conflict and return home to pursue a career as a manga artist. Rather than succumbing entirely to despair, he views his tropical surroundings through a creative lens, imagining the island outpost as a wild paradise that might one day serve as the setting for his own stories. This artistic vision provides him with a fragile sense of purpose amid the chaos. However, Tamaru’s idealism stands in stark contrast to the grim reality accepted by most of his comrades. While he dreams of a future beyond the battlefield, the soldiers around him have quietly resigned themselves to a far darker fate, fully anticipating that none of them will ever leave Peleliu alive.
