Jo Niijima's Story

In the twilight years of the Edo period, Jo Niijima risked everything to journey to America in pursuit of freedom. Aided by compassionate individuals he encountered in this unfamiliar land, he immersed himself in a progressive, democratic education across three distinct institutions. This transformative experience abroad ignited a profound realization: for Japan to evolve into a truly modern nation, it required an educational foundation capable of nurturing independent, free-thinking individuals guided by a strong moral conscience. Armed with this vision, Niijima returned to his homeland determined to introduce an American-style academic institution. He boldly undertook the monumental challenge of establishing Japan’s first private university, dedicating his life to reshaping his country's educational landscape. Although his ultimate ambition remained unfulfilled at the time of his passing, the dream he championed refused to fade. Today, his enduring legacy continues to inspire and thrive within the students, alumni, and faculty of Doshisha University, keeping his pioneering spirit alive for future generations.
