Very Chubby Belly

Very Chubby Belly is a 2024 animated short film created as the graduation project of Kazuna Okada at Tama Art University. The work is directly adapted from an original poem written by Okada, which centers on a melancholic yet endearing character known simply as Very Chubby Belly. Despite her gentle nature, she exists in a world where she is largely unloved and unwanted, with those around her even wishing she would disappear entirely. Yet, paradoxically, her presence is inescapable, lingering everywhere she goes. Beneath the rejection she faces, Very Chubby Belly remains a quietly sorrowful sweetheart. The narrative captures this poignant contrast between societal dismissal and her inherent lovability, ultimately expressing a deep desire to embrace and comfort her with boundless affection. It is a story that transforms feelings of isolation into a tender meditation on empathy and unconditional warmth. Visually, the film translates the emotional resonance of Okada’s poetry into a delicate, intimate aesthetic. The animation unfolds like a series of small, heartfelt letters, utilizing a soft and inviting visual style that mirrors the gentle tone of the source material. This approach creates a deeply personal viewing experience, perfectly complementing the bittersweet journey of its lonely but lovable protagonist.
