Gwangjang

Isak Borg, the First Secretary of the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang, is a striking figure whose tall frame, blonde hair, and blue eyes make him impossible to overlook. Operating under the constant surveillance expected of foreign diplomats, he is strictly forbidden from forming personal connections with local citizens. Yet, Isak defies these rigid boundaries by secretly pursuing a romance with Bok-joo, a North Korean traffic officer. When his final attempt to extend his diplomatic posting is denied, Isak faces an agonizing choice. He pleads with Bok-joo to leave her life behind and return with him to Stockholm, but she firmly rejects the proposal before vanishing without warning. Unaware of the severe peril his actions have placed upon the woman he loves, a frantic Isak turns to Myeong-jun, his state-assigned interpreter, for assistance in locating her. Myeong-jun refuses to intervene, leaving the diplomat entirely isolated in a hostile environment where trust is nonexistent. As his desperation mounts, Isak’s grip on reality begins to fracture, and he grows increasingly paranoid, viewing everyone around him as a potential threat.
