GOOD-MOURNING

Thirty-four-year-old Keiko Hasegawa leads a quiet, unremarkable existence in her small hometown, where she works at the local funeral home. Her life may not be extraordinary, but she has found a comfortable rhythm within its predictable routines. Everything changes, however, when she is assigned to oversee an unusually peculiar funeral service. Faced with circumstances that defy her everyday experiences, Keiko must navigate this strange assignment and find a way to see it through without incident. The film explores her quiet determination as she confronts the unexpected challenges of this singular event, testing her ability to maintain composure and professionalism when familiar routines are disrupted. Set against the backdrop of her modest community, the story examines how even the most ordinary lives can be interrupted by moments of profound strangeness, leaving Keiko to wonder if she can successfully manage the day’s bizarre demands. GOOD-MOURNING is a 2025 animated graduate work produced at Tokyo University of the Arts, Graduate School of Film and New Media, Department of Animation.
