The Rose of Versailles

Produced to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the original manga, this film adaptation unfolds against the backdrop of pre-revolutionary France. To forge a vital political alliance between their nations, the Empress of Austria arranges for her charming but indulged daughter, Marie Antoinette, to wed the French crown prince, Louis XVI. Upon arriving at the opulent Palace of Versailles, the young Austrian princess encounters Oscar François de Jarjayes, the commanding Captain of the Royal Guards. Though Oscar presents as a dashing young man, Marie Antoinette soon discovers a startling truth: the captain is actually a woman. Born into a prestigious noble family desperate for a male heir, Oscar was raised as a son to preserve their military legacy. Suffocated by the strict protocols of court life and yearning for genuine connection, the new queen quickly forms a deep bond with the enigmatic guard. However, as Marie Antoinette carelessly wields her royal authority, a profound rift begins to form. Oscar finds herself increasingly torn between her sworn duty to the monarchy and the worsening plight of France’s impoverished citizens. Set against the historical turmoil of the French Revolution, the story chronicles the parallel struggles of two women bound by oppressive familial expectations. Forced to sacrifice their true selves and personal happiness, they nonetheless rise to become pivotal figures in history.
