Shigeru Mizuki’s Hitler

Decades after his death, Adolf Hitler remains an enigma that historians, psychologists, and military strategists have struggled to fully comprehend. In this compelling biographical manga, acclaimed creator Shigeru Mizuki—known for Kitaro, NonNonBa, and Showa: A History of Japan—delves into the historical record to craft a nuanced portrait of the dictator’s life. The narrative traces Hitler’s journey from his early days as a destitute art student in Austria to the ultimate devastation of a ruined Germany, carefully dissecting both his magnetic charisma and his ruthless political calculations. Mizuki grants equal weight to every pivotal chapter of Hitler’s existence, weaving together major historical events and deeply personal tragedies. The Munich Beer Hall Putsch, his rise to the chancellorship, the sudden death of his half-niece Geli, the catastrophic Battle of Stalingrad, his relationship with Eva Braun, and his final demise are all explored with thorough, absorbing detail. Rendered in Mizuki’s signature artistic style—where strikingly realistic backgrounds contrast with expressive, stylized characters—this work stands as a fascinating and informative overview of one of history’s most destructive figures, crafted by Japan’s most celebrated cartoonist.
