Rabuka

Set in contemporary Japan during a period when the coronavirus pandemic has fundamentally altered everyday life, Rabuka follows a young man whose routine is disrupted when his childhood friend moves into his home. Having recently lost his job as a direct consequence of the widespread economic fallout from the virus, the friend arrives seeking shelter and stability. However, beneath this familiar history lies a deeply unpleasant reality: the newcomer is an entirely toxic presence. The narrative explores the bleak emotional landscape of living through an indefinite crisis, capturing the pervasive sense of despair that comes with not knowing when the pandemic will finally end. Against this suffocating backdrop, the story delves into the deteriorating dynamic between the two young men. Rather than offering comfort or solidarity, their shared living arrangement exposes a rotten, corrosive relationship. Bound together by circumstance and history, they are trapped in a claustrophobic environment where resentment and dysfunction fester, painting a stark portrait of isolation and human decay during a global emergency.
