SHAREDOL

SHAREDOL originated from a collaborative development process in which young producers from Toei Animation and Sotsu submitted approximately fifteen distinct concepts. Two standout proposals were ultimately merged: one centered on a modern young man who leaps through time into a world blending the Edo period with the near future to forge his own destiny, and another following an idol who travels back to the Edo era. This creative fusion resulted in a pilot film built around the intertwined themes of historical Japan and idol culture. Set during the Kansei era (1789–1800) of the Edo period—a time when public entertainment faced severe restrictions—the story explores a compelling premise: applying modern idol production techniques to cultivate local talent in a historically repressive society. An ordinary young protagonist finds himself navigating this unfamiliar world, where he takes on the ambitious challenge of forming an idol group. He recruits six girls from vastly different walks of life, including a teahouse worker, a samurai’s daughter, a girl connected to the Dutch trading house, a merchant’s daughter, a high-ranking courtesan known as an oiran, and a kunoichi female ninja. Each girl carries her own personal struggles and burdens, yet together they embark on unprecedented idol activities that defy the rigid constraints of their era.
