A Bite of Bone

Set against the intimate backdrop of a small Japanese island—the very place where the film’s director was born and raised—A Bite of Bone follows a young girl navigating profound loss. During her father’s funeral, she quietly reflects on their final summer together, recalling the fleeting moments they shared before his passing. Her memories paint a vivid picture of childhood innocence intertwined with an underlying sense of impermanence, grounding the story in deeply personal emotion. As the girl processes her grief, the narrative draws a striking parallel between her father's death and a hidden reality within her immediate surroundings. Nestled inside the mountain directly behind her family home lies a bomb storage facility, a silent and imposing presence that looms over her daily life. The film thoughtfully explores the connection between this concealed threat and the devastating loss she has just endured. By weaving together the fragility of human life and the lingering shadows of destruction, the story examines how personal mourning intersects with broader, unspoken dangers. Through the eyes of a child, A Bite of Bone offers a poignant meditation on memory, mortality, and the quiet weight of secrets buried close to home.
