Polar Bear Bears Boredom

In the vast expanse of the deep blue sea, a profoundly bored polar bear drifts among a diverse cast of marine animals. This animated short continues an ancient artistic tradition inspired by twelfth- and thirteenth-century Japanese picture scrolls depicting frolicking creatures, reimagining that classic style as a lively underwater adventure. As the ocean's inhabitants spread across the world's waters, their inner thoughts and daily lives are revealed through clever bilingual wordplay in both English and Japanese. Phrases such as "Polar bear bears boredom" and "Other otter, poor otter" transform simple observations into witty linguistic riddles, giving each sea creature a distinct and humorous voice. The entire film unfolds in a single, unbroken seven-minute continuous shot, driven by the rhythmic cadence of bilingual poetry. This unique structural choice immerses viewers directly into the flowing narrative without interruption, allowing the rhyming verses to carry equal meaning across both languages simultaneously. The project serves as a modern homage to traditional scroll painting, translating its playful caricatures of animals into a seamless animated format. Polar Bear Bears Boredom made its official debut on August 14, 2021, screening during the KidsEye Film Festival Animated Shorts program at the 39th Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival.
