I Remember

I Remember is a graduation film by Man Wei from Musashino Art University that masterfully integrates shifting artistic styles directly into its narrative structure. Rather than serving merely as a visual backdrop, the evolving animation becomes an organic component of the story itself, functioning as an indirect metaphor for personal growth and maturation. The film traces a lifelong dream of becoming a painter, beginning in early childhood. As the protagonist reflects on this ambition, fragments of memory surface—specific people, meaningful places, and formative incidents that shaped their artistic aspirations. These recollections are gathered and woven together, allowing the audience to experience the past through the lens of evolving perception. Through this reflective process, the protagonist’s childhood is vividly painted in a distinct visual style that honors those early years. As the narrative progresses and the character grows older, the animation gradually transforms, mirroring the passage of time and the natural shift in perspective that accompanies maturity. This deliberate progression in artistry ultimately unites the memories of the past with the reality of growing up, creating a deeply personal exploration of how dreams and identity evolve over a lifetime.
