Red Shade

Keiichi Tanaami’s 2021 animated film Red Shade is a groundbreaking visual work rooted in a series of original paintings created specifically to be brought into motion. The project features eighty carefully selected scenes, each animated with its own distinct movement. When assembled and edited together, these individual sequences formed the initial version of the film. What makes Red Shade truly unique is its structural flexibility: every scene stands as an independently complete piece of art, allowing the entire sequence to be freely rearranged without altering the fundamental essence of the work. This modular approach invites endless creative possibilities. A viewer or curator could begin the experience with the eightieth scene and conclude with the first, or organize the segments in entirely irregular patterns, such as jumping from scene one to four, then eight, then seven. Regardless of the chosen order, the core artistic identity of the film remains intact. At the same time, this fluid structure empowers dynamic visual experimentation. By swapping images frame by frame, it becomes possible to generate striking new impressions—transforming the viewing experience to evoke sensations as vivid and delicate as a refreshing breeze sweeping gracefully across a lush green meadow.
