Based on Kei Ii’s mystery novel, Woodpecker Detective’s Office unfolds in Japan during the Meiji era of 1909. The narrative follows fictionalized portrayals of two historical figures who were genuine acquaintances: the poet Takuboku Ishikawa and the linguist Kyousuke Kindaichi. Driven by the pressing need to financially support his family, Takuboku operates a private detective agency, channeling his sharp intellect into solving mysteries rather than solely pursuing literary ambitions. The central conflict emerges when strange reports of ghostly apparitions begin circulating around the Asakusa Junikai building, an iconic structure also widely known as the Ryounkai. Tasked with uncovering the truth behind these supposed supernatural occurrences, Takuboku enlists the help of Kindaichi. Together, the unlikely pair delves into an eerie investigation that challenges their rational minds. As they navigate the shadows of the historic tower, the two men must determine whether the haunting phenomena are genuinely otherworldly or if a more grounded, human explanation lurks behind the terrifying rumors threatening the landmark.
