Representation of Light

In the deeply personal film Representation of Light, the filmmaker reflects on a lifelong relationship defined by absence and memory. For as long as they can remember, their deceased great-grandmother existed solely as a silent portrait hanging on the wall—a static image that offered little connection to the living, breathing woman she once was. This lingering presence sparked an enduring emotional dilemma: how to bridge the gap between a distant ancestral figure and the filmmaker’s own internal sense of identity. Driven by a profound desire to substantiate her great-grandmother’s life within themselves, the protagonist embarks on an intimate creative journey. Rather than accepting the single framed photograph as the final word on her existence, they seek a more tangible way to honor and internalize her legacy. The filmmaker decides to actively engage with her memory through the tactile art of analog photography. By carefully photographing and physically developing pictures of the great-grandmother captured at two distinct stages of her life, the protagonist attempts to transform a flat, forgotten relic into a vivid, multidimensional presence. This meditative process becomes both a tribute and a deeply personal exploration of lineage, grief, and the enduring light of those who came before.
