Cocoon

In the sweltering final months of the Pacific War, the idyllic shores of Okinawa have transformed into a fortress of desperation. Among the chaos, schoolgirls San and Mayu cling to their childhood bond, their days of youthful innocence shattered when they and their classmates are conscripted into the Imperial military as field nurses. Thrust into the squalor of makeshift hospitals, the young women bear witness to the endless tide of shattered soldiers, their hands stained with blood and their spirits eroded by the relentless drumbeat of defeat. They are no longer students, but reluctant cogs in a machinery that demands their absolute devotion—even unto death. When the command comes for the remnants of their unit to embrace ritual suicide rather than surrender, San, Mayu, and the few survivors among their peers make a harrowing choice: they flee. But escape offers no sanctuary. The lush, tropical paradise that once defined their home has become a labyrinth of carnage, riddled with hidden perils, starvation, and the unrelenting terror of an advancing enemy. Stripped of their uniforms and their prescribed roles, the fugitives must navigate a hostile wilderness where nature itself seems to conspire against them, and where the greatest danger often lies in the fragility of their own hope. As they forage for survival and evade the crossfire, the two friends are forced to confront the cruelest question of all: in a world that has decreed them expendable, what does it truly mean to live?
