Gaku Shishiya is the son of Kei Shishiya, a former star player for Japan’s national volleyball team. Throughout middle school, Gaku has served as his team’s ace hitter, though he often questions whether that title is genuinely earned or simply inherited because of his father’s name. One day, Kei encounters Noboru, a once-in-a-generation volleyball prodigy armed with a devastatingly powerful spike, and commits to molding him into the country’s next great talent. Faced with the consequences of that decision, Gaku realizes he cannot conform to the style his father demands. In response, he resolves to defeat both Kei and Noboru by forging a game that is entirely his own.
