The Conditions of Paradise

This anthology of romance between women opens with its title story, in which adult lovers Sarina and Sumi navigate the delicate boundaries of their relationship and confront a quietly unsettling question: can too much freedom actually threaten love itself? Companion pieces trace the couple across time, from the moment they first crossed the line between friendship and something deeper to the gentle, sunlit chapters of the life they go on to share. Between these installments, the collection offers a varied set of standalone tales. An instructor at an art preparatory school wrestles with feelings of inadequacy beside her vibrant twenty-year-old girlfriend, while Keiko hopes to take her own relationship to the next stage. Elsewhere, two women embrace a love that accepts them exactly as they are, and a determined girl struggles to be taken seriously by the one she adores. The volume then turns to Japan's past for a fantastical story in which a cherry blossom falls in love with a girl and is granted human form—on the condition that her body will crumble away unless she and her beloved can sacrifice everything for their romance. A cozy bonus story rounds out the collection.
