Summary

Official Details
Widely regarded as the work that launched Osamu Tezuka’s legendary career, Shin Takarajima is a dynamic action-adventure drama inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale. The story follows a young boy named Pete who unexpectedly uncovers a map leading to the fabled Treasure Island. Driven by curiosity and courage, he sets out on a perilous maritime voyage to locate the hidden riches, navigating the challenges of an expansive ocean adventure. The manga captivated readers with its distinctive Western-influenced artwork and rapid, cinematic pacing, ultimately selling 400,000 copies and becoming a massive bestseller. Its success laid the crucial groundwork for Japan's postwar manga boom and helped define the medium's modern visual storytelling style. However, the original publication differed significantly from Tezuka’s initial vision. Editor Sasaki Shichima made substantial modifications to the manuscript, excising nearly sixty pages and altering various lines of dialogue. Years later, when compiling The Complete Works of Osamu Tezuka, the creator meticulously redrew the story from memory to restore his original intent. The influential title was eventually adapted into animation.
