The Storm Fairy

*The Storm Fairy* is a compelling anthology of three short stories crafted by the legendary manga creator Osamu Tezuka. The titular tale follows an empress who, fleeing her burning castle into the surrounding woods, encounters a mischievous forest fairy willing to grant her wish for a seemingly minor price. Only after giving birth to her daughter, Ruri, does the empress grasp the devastating cost of their bargain. Cursed with a disfigured face, Princess Ruri is condemned to live behind a mask. When a scheming malcontent discovers her secret, he attempts to usurp the emperor by passing off his own daughter as the hidden princess. Fortunately, Ruri finds unexpected allies in a humble ronin and a beautiful fairy, both determined to restore her rightful place on the throne. The collection also features “Kokeshi Detective Agency,” which centers on the fearless young Pako as she investigates eerie mysteries alongside her protective dog, Moll. Much to his dismay, Pako’s timid older brother Taro is continually dragged along on these chilling adventures. Finally, “Pink Angel” tells the story of Pink, a benevolent sunset cloud who spends her time descending to the surface to comfort the sorrowful and aid those in need. Her compassionate interference, however, draws the bitter resentment of two hostile rainclouds, Sir Brown and Sepia, who are determined to put an end to her meddling.
