Metamorphose

Life is defined by a continuous series of transformations, from the internal journey of self-improvement to the inevitable physical progression from infancy through adulthood and into old age. In the world crafted by Osamu Tezuka, however, these metamorphoses serve as a lens to expose the profound darkness inherent in humanity. The stories within this collection explore how change can be both deeply unsettling and unexpectedly beautiful, revealing the complex nature of the human condition through a variety of striking scenarios. Across these interconnected tales, transformation takes on many bizarre and poignant forms. A mysterious machine alters society's discarded outcasts, turning them into vulnerable prey for hunters to pursue with ease. Elsewhere, a joyful dancing farmer suffers a cruel twist of fate, reduced to a downtrodden vagrant whose only remaining source of comfort and support is his loyal cat. Yet, not every metamorphosis carries a sinister edge. In one instance, a towering, brutish figure defies all expectations, ultimately revealing himself to be the gentlest, most effeminate companion anyone could ever hope to find. Through these vivid vignettes, Tezuka masterfully illustrates that true change often challenges our deepest assumptions about identity, cruelty, and compassion.
