Summary

Official Details
In 1855, Japan’s long-standing policy of isolation comes to an end, ushering in the turbulent Bakumatsu era. In Edo’s Hill of the Three Hundred district, twenty-six-year-old samurai Ibuya Manjiro begins his service as a low-ranking retainer under the minor daimyo Lord Matsudaira. Meanwhile, in Osaka, twenty-nine-year-old Tezuka Ryoan, a devoted student of Dutch medicine, secures his place at the prestigious Teki Academy. Both young men possess exceptional talent matched only by their volatile tempers, and in a nation teetering on the edge of upheaval, neither hesitates to court danger. Though they share little mutual affection, fate repeatedly draws them into each other's orbit. Their unlikely connection is forged one night when Tezuka is summoned to stitch up Ibuya’s wounds following an illicit duel. Mere weeks later, the roles reverse as Ibuya becomes the sole barrier protecting Tezuka from a ruthless gang of swordsmen dispatched by the Shogunate’s head of medicine. Bound by circumstance and conflict, these two fiercely independent figures must navigate a rapidly changing world where survival demands unexpected alliances.
