Ōoku: The Inner Chambers

Set against the backdrop of Japan’s Edo period, a devastating and mysterious epidemic known as the Redface Pox sweeps across the nation, exclusively targeting its male population. Within eight decades of the initial outbreak, the demographic landscape is irrevocably altered, with men dwindling to merely one-quarter of the female populace. This catastrophic shift forces a complete restructuring of society, compelling women to assume every position of power and responsibility once reserved for men, including the supreme military authority of the Shogun. In this transformed world, surviving men are no longer viewed as societal leaders but as invaluable vessels of life requiring meticulous protection. Their scarcity elevates them to objects of intense reverence and careful guardianship. Among these protected few, those blessed with exceptional beauty face a distinct destiny: they are selected to serve within the Shogun's Inner Chambers. These elite quarters become a gilded sanctuary where the most striking young men are gathered, reshaping the traditional dynamics of power, duty, and survival in a society entirely redefined by loss.
