The Caterpillar

Adapted from Edogawa Rampo's 1929 short story of the same name, The Caterpillar is a haunting psychosexual manga that explores the devastating aftermath of war. Lieutenant Sunaga, a severely disfigured and limbless veteran of World War I, returns home to his young and beautiful wife. Initially greeted as a celebrated hero by those around him, his status quickly deteriorates as society forgets his sacrifice. Shunned due to his horrific injuries, he is left entirely isolated within the confines of his own household. Unable to speak or care for himself, Sunaga becomes completely dependent on his wife for every basic need. What begins as dutiful caretaking slowly twists into something far darker. As the isolation deepens, his wife grows to loathe him, transforming her resentment into cruel amusement. She begins to toy with his helpless form, treating him less like a husband and more like the creature his title suggests. The narrative delves deeply into themes of degradation, shifting power dynamics, and the grotesque realities hidden behind closed doors. Stripped of his agency, voice, and dignity, Sunaga is trapped in a nightmarish existence where his only companion is also his tormentor. This disturbing tale serves as a chilling examination of human cruelty born from despair and revulsion.
