Binbou Shimai Monogatari

The Yamada sisters—fifteen-year-old Kyo and nine-year-old Asu—are students, attending secondary and primary school respectively. Their mother has passed away, and their father fled after accumulating gambling debts. Despite these hardships, the sisters are determined to face each day with optimism and pride, refusing to be consumed by misfortune. Thanks to legal reforms introduced several years earlier, Kyo is now able to balance her studies with part-time work, taking on jobs such as newspaper delivery and tutoring to support their household. Meanwhile, Asu manages the cooking, housekeeping, and family budget, doing her part to help her older sister. They are watched over by kind neighbors, including the novelist Saegusa and the aunt who runs the public bath. Though their life is often hard and sometimes painful, the sisters find comfort and strength in having each other.
