Oyaji

In the poor districts of Osaka, Kumada devotes himself to providing for his wife and two young children. An enormous man riddled with scars, he works himself to the bone, smokes, and drinks sake as though it were mere water. Gruff, frightening, and a man of few words, he nevertheless harbors a deep love for his family—one he would defend at the cost of his own life. When members of a yakuza clan set his house ablaze to clear the way for a real estate transaction, Kumada kills the men who nearly burned his loved ones alive. Jailed for the murders, he spends fifteen years behind bars before finally walking free. Returning home, he finds his family once more—only to be met with wariness. His children, who know their father solely as the man who abandoned them, regard him with deep distrust. Yet Kumada remains resolved to reclaim his place and take charge of their upbringing, beginning with his son, a street urchin abused by the tough guys of the neighborhood.
