No Longer Human

Set against the neon-lit backdrop of contemporary Tokyo, the story centers on Yozo Oba, a young man whose affluent upbringing in Japan's distant northern reaches did little to prepare him for the brutal complexities of human intimacy. Afflicted by a frail physique and haunted by the cruel hands of a relative from his past, Yozo finds himself utterly unequipped to present his genuine self to the world. Since his high school days, he has clung to a brittle mask of performative cheerfulness—a superficial wit and clumsy humor designed to deflect suspicion and keep his peers at a safe distance. Yet beneath this jester's facade lies a profound emptiness, a self-awareness that his own life is a hollow performance with no audience but himself. The work is divided into three carefully delineated parts, each presented as a personal memorandum that traces Yozo's journey from the uncertainty of adolescence to the weary resignation of his late twenties. Together, these segments construct a devastating portrait of psychological erosion, charting the protagonist's ongoing failure to bridge the chasm between his inner turmoil and the external world. As a faithful adaptation of Dazai Osamu's iconic novel, this manga captures the original's unflinching examination of isolation, identity, and the haunting consequences of a life lived entirely behind a mask.
