Modernist

On the rain-soaked day of his older brother's funeral, Ho-il moves through the motions of grief in a haze of numb formality, surrounded by mourners whose condolences feel hollow. Then he meets Sangyeon—a quiet, enigmatic figure lingering at the periphery of the ceremony—and the instant pull of attraction catches him completely off guard. In that brief, charged exchange, Ho-il feels a flicker of warmth he hasn't allowed himself in days. But the fragile solace shatters when he discovers that Sangyeon is no stranger: he was, in fact, his late brother's secret boyfriend, a hidden chapter of his sibling's life that Ho-il never knew existed. The revelation turns a simple, unexpected spark into a labyrinth of confusion, jealousy, and painful curiosity about the man his brother truly was. Thrown together by circumstance and tethered by their mutual loss, Ho-il and Sangyeon find themselves navigating an uneasy, unspoken connection that defies easy definition. Every glance carries the weight of shared memories neither of them fully owns, and every conversation treads the line between consolation and betrayal. Yet as they peel back the layers of their grief—Ho-il mourning the brother he idolized, Sangyeon mourning the lover he lost in secret—they begin to see reflections of their own loneliness in each other. What emerges from the tension is fragile and unexpected: a tentative understanding that deepens into something far more tender than either anticipated. In the shadow of death, two wounded hearts just might find the courage to nurture a new beginning, one born not from forgetting, but from honoring the love that brought them together.
