Yuukoku no Rasputin

Set against the tense political climate of the early 2000s, Yuukoku no Rasputin follows a Japanese diplomat who finds himself abruptly ensnared in a ruthless government purge. As the bureaucratic machinery turns against him, he begins to draw striking parallels between his own harrowing ordeal and the infamous fate of Grigori Rasputin, the legendary Russian mystic whose influence made him a target of state intrigue. What unfolds is a Kafkaesque descent into a labyrinth of institutional paranoia, where loyalty is meaningless and survival depends on navigating an unforgiving system designed to crush dissent. Operating as both a gripping legal thriller and a sharp geopolitical drama, the narrative meticulously chronicles the protagonist’s desperate struggle for justice amid escalating international stakes. Every courtroom maneuver and backroom negotiation reveals the fragile intersection of domestic law and global power politics, painting a vivid portrait of a man fighting to reclaim his life from the very state he once served. The manga is directly adapted from Kokka no Wana (Trap of the State), the acclaimed real-life autobiography written by Sato Masaru, a former diplomat turned political writer. By translating his firsthand account into a compelling visual narrative, the story delivers a chilling, authentic exploration of corruption, resilience, and the hidden costs of public service.
